Audi Q3
It may look like a shrunken Q5, but Audi’s latest mini-SUV has a distinct personality of its own. When launched in May 2012, the Q3 will be the most affordable Audi SUV in India. However, there is nothing cheap about the Q3’s quality which is comparable to Audi’s line-up of saloons and larger SUVs. There is fair space for four adults inside while Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system should also ensure you can get a bit adventurous on weekend excursions. The Q3 will be launched with a 176bhp, 2-litre turbo diesel while a 211bhp 2-litre TFSI turbo-petrol engine will also be a part of the model mix. Prices are likely to start at Rs 27 lakh. This could be the game changer for Audi.

Audi S6/S7/S8 Think of Audi’s ‘S’ cars as the sportier cousins of the normal line-up with the S variant’s more powerful engines and slightly extroverted design details being the key differentiators here. India will get the entire S range that includes the S4, S5, S6, S7 and S8 in 2012. The new S6 that was launched at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show comes with a 414bhp, 4-litre twin-turbo V8. Performance will be entertaining, to say the least. Another new addition to the S line is the S8. Marrying sports car performance to limo-like luxury, the S8 shares its engine with the S6, but power is an even higher 513bhp. Pricing is yet not known, but expect these S cars to cost considerably more than the current range-topping variants for each model. However, the S5 will be a cheaper option to the more powerful RS5. S6 will spearhead Audi’s S line’s entry into India. S8 is sports car and limo rolled into one. . Sportier petrol S7 will join diesel A7 sibling.

New BMW 3-seriesBMW’s big launch for 2012 will be the new 3-series. Codenamed the F30, the new 3-series is scheduled to go on sale in India towards the middle of 2012. The new 3-series is longer and wider than the car it replaces and now bears a strong resemblance to the 5-series. The larger dimensions have resulted in a roomier cabin, which addresses a major shortcoming on the current car. Engines are likely to be carried forward from the current model, albeit with improved efficiency and more power. We have driven the 3-series at its international launch in Spain and came back impressed with its near-perfect blend of performance, driving dynamics and ride comfort. BMW’s plans to set up an engine plant in India also point to a lower price tag for the Three in the future. The BMW 3-series then sounds a whole lot more interesting than ever before.

Ashok Leyland Stile
Where the Nissan Evalia will target at private car buyers, the Stile from partner Ashok Leyland will be positioned as a commercial people mover. It will get a far more basic interior and will also do without many features like ABS and airbags. The Stile and Evalia will also come with different powertrains and engine’s in different states of tune. However, a cargo version is a possibility and there could be a seven seat CNG version too. But don’t expect to see the Stile on roads any time soon. It will be launched six months after the Evalia that arrives in late 2012.

Chevrolet’s versatile SUV has just been given a face-lift and looks all the better for it. An imposing split grille in line with Chevrolet’s new family look and double-barrel headlamps are the most prominent changes to the Captiva’s styling while clear lens tail-lamps complete the makeover.
The seven-seater will also benefit from revised interiors. On the engine front, the 2-litre motor will be replaced by a new 2.2-litre diesel unit. Peak power will see a spike from 148bhp at present to 184bhp on the new engine. Prices are likely to increase by around Rs 1 lakh when the new model is launched in the middle of 2012.

Chevrolet Cruze (upgraded)
Originally launched in 2009, Chevrolet’s stylish Cruze saloon is all set to get its first round of upgrades shortly. Firstly, the Cruze’s 2-litre, Z-series common-rail diesel engine will be updated and will now output an impressive 163bhp, a decent 13bhp more than the current engine. Torque will also increase, so performance will be even better than before. The updated Cruze will also carry a more aggressive front bumper, reprofiled headlamps and a slightly different front grille. On the inside, Chevrolet will be redesigning the rear seat to improve headroom, a small but important revision that would make the Cruze all the more attractive to chauffeur-driven saloon buyers.

Chevrolet Enjoy (MPV)
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) that picked up a 50 percent stake in GM India last year has big plans for India. Among the products headed here is the Wuling-made CN-100 MPV. The CN-100 may not score too high on styling but its trump card will be its versatility. Likely to be sold as a seven-seater, its second and third row seats can also be folded flat or removed altogether. Powering the MPV will be a 1.4-litre petrol engine that will be joined by the Fiat-sourced 1.3 Multijet diesel in 2013. The CN-100 will be manufactured at General Motors’ Talegaon plant and will be sold under the Chevrolet brand name. With no diesel option available until 2013, GM will have to price the CN-100 very competitively to attract buyers. Don’t be surprised if this one comes with a sub-Rs 6 lakh price tag.

Chevrolet Sail Saloon
The Sail is Chevrolet’s weapon for a fresh assault in the midsize segment. Designed and developed in China by GM and SAIC, the Sail looks every bit a modern Chevy. The proportions are nice and styling is sharp all over. Interior space is a highlight and that should give it an edge over smaller rivals like the Maruti Swift Dzire.
Power will come courtesy a 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 102bhp, and eventually the 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced Multijet diesel. Interestingly, the Sail platform has its roots in the same Opel Corsa that was on sale in India till 2006; so the car should not be too expensive for Chevrolet to produce. Prices are likely to be affordable, ranging from Rs 6-7.5 lakh.

Chevrolet Sail hatchback
Simply put, small cars equal big sales. And this small car has the potential to seriously put the wind in Chevrolet’s sales (pun intended)! The Sail hatchback that will be launched before the saloon looks striking whichever angle you look at it. The design looks neat and, like the saloon, its spacious interiors will be a selling point. It is likely to share the Beat’s 1.2-litre petrol engine and also get the 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet within a year of launch. Costs will be kept low thanks to the car sharing many components with the saloon. A sub-Rs 4 lakh base price would make it a very enticing option.

Ford EcoSport
We’ve been tracking the EcoSport for quite some time and can confirm the final few details on Ford’s exciting new mini-SUV. First and foremost is to do with the EcoSport’s length. Ford has been cagey about the EcoSport’s dimensions, but we now know for sure it will be a sub-four metre vehicle. That means the EcoSport qualifies as a small car and will avail of a lower rate of excise duty. We hear Ford is looking at a really aggressive price tag for the EcoSport so we won’t be too surprised if the base model retails for under Rs 6 lakh.
Factfile:
Another piece of good news is that the production model looks very similar to the concept that was first shown at the Auto Expo 2012. Its tall stance and chunky styling are pure SUV and that’s sure to be a huge draw for Indian buyers. Adding brawn to the design is the lagre trapezoidal grille, cladding on the lower front bumper and side sills and fixed spare wheel at the back. However, the large wheel arches also make the EcoSport’s 16-inch wheels look small and we expect the Indian car to get 17-inchers. As on the concept, the roof gets chrome rails and the rear side windows have the familiar Ford upwards kink in the window line.
As expected, the EcoSport will also share many cabin components with the Fiesta and the dashboard is similar in design too. There should be decent space for four occupants but boot space will be no larger than a hatchback’s. Interestingly, the EcoSport’s touch sensitive and electric operated boot release is hidden in the tail light cluster.
Like the Fiesta, the EcoSport is underpinned by Ford’s global B-platform, so excellent dynamics are almost a given on this mini-SUV. The EcoSport will also be sold with the 1.5-litre diesel engine as offered on the Fiesta but the big news is the debut of Ford’s latest 1-litre EcoBoost petrol motor. While its small displacement may suggest otherwise, the engine benefits from turbocharging and direct injection to make it just as powerful as a 1.6-litre motor while being more efficient at the same time. What remains to be seen is if Indian buyers will readily take to such a small capacity motor.
Ford thinks it has the right product for the Indian market. We’ll know when the EcoSport hits Indian roads in early 2013.

Ford Fiesta hatchback
There has been a lot of interest in the new Fiesta hatchback of late and if our spy picture of a test car is anything to go by, then Ford seems to have finally decided to manufacture the model in India.
The hatchback is identical to the saloon up till the B-pillar. Thereafter, the smartly executed hatch section gives the car better proportions than the Fiesta saloon. The interiors will be shared with the saloon as will the pair of 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. While it will be positioned as a premium hatchback, pricing will still be critical. If priced above Rs 6.5 lakh, the Fiesta hatchback could have the same fate as the Honda Jazz when it was first launched.

Ford Endeavour
The Ranger pickup that forms the basis for the Endeavour is already on sale in Thailand so it’s just a matter of time before the SUV comes to India. The design conforms with Ford’s global design language, so the final SUV version will look a whole lot more modern than the current dated Indian model.
The interiors should be step up too with a smarter fascia and use of better materials. Thai Rangers are available with a new 148bhp 2.2-litre TDCi diesel engine and this motor could replace the 2.5-litre powerplant currently on the Endeavour. The new engine comes mated to six-speed manual and automatic transmissions which may be India-bound as well. A price hike seems imminent but Ford could offset this by offering the Endeavour loaded with features.

HM Ambassador (sub-4 metre)
If you thought the Ambassador was dead, think again. A new pick-up variant for the rural markets has just hit the roads and now Hindustan Motors (HM) wants to cash in on excise benefits extended to sub-four-metre cars. Yes, a sub-four-metre Ambassador is on its way.

New Honda Civic
The latest Civic is out and it’s headed for an India launch in mid-2012. The design is more evolutionary than revolutionary (unlike the earlier car). In fact, the lines have been toned down which should make the saloon appeal to a wider customer base. However, the interiors are just as radical as before and feature a dual level split instrument console.
The new Civic should feature an updated version of the 1.8-litre, SOHC I-4 engine with improved refinement, emissions, economy and performance. Peak power will be around 140bhp. A diesel engine is also on the cards but is unlikely to make it to India before late-2013. The design is modern Hyundai with the Elantra’s smooth lines flowing into each other yet managing to lend the car an aggressive look. Again, interior styling is far from ordinary with a striking fascia that is dominated by a multimedia screen. Smart packaging means space should be as good or perhaps better than the competition. Mahindra-Ssangyong Korando
The Korando will be the second SsangYong to be sold in India. While styling may not break new ground, it is quite smart to look at. Five seats mean the Korando enters the SUV segment with a disadvantage but to its credit it does boast a spacious cabin. Interior quality is far superior to all Mahindras so far, and rightfully the Korando will be positioned above M&M’s own SUV line-up. The Korando features a monocoque chassis (a first for SsangYong) but from our drive last year (January 2011), we can tell you the SUV’s dynamics are just about average. Permanent all-wheel drive and a high ground clearance should give it good off-road capabilities though its old-school body-on-frame chassis means on-road dynamics would be far from the best. More powerful lithium ion batteries, a range of 160km per charge and a claimed top speed of 104kph makes the NXR the more practical of the two, but it will also be the more expensive variant. Mahindra Mini-Xylo (sub-4 metres)
The government’s small car excise rebate regulations have seriously brought out the creative side of Indian engineers. The Mini-Xylo illustrated here is a fine example of this ingenuity. Built on a shortened Xylo chassis, the UV gets a redesigned tail with a shorter rear overhang to help keep length under the crucial four-metre mark. As a result, the Mini-Xylo will almost definitely lose the third row of seats. Elements like the dashboard and interior trim are likely to be carried over from the standard Xylo. With an engine cap of 1.5 litres for diesel small cars, the Mini-Xylo will use a three-cylinder version of the larger Xylo’s 2.5-litre engine. Bore and stroke will also be reduced to keep displacement under 1500cc. Four-wheel drive will be an option too on the Mini-Xylo.
Likely to be priced between Rs 4-5 lakh, this car could give hatchbacks a run for their money.
A lot depends on how it’s positioned, though.

Factfile:
Engine: 1.5-litre diesel
Power/Torque: NA
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: NA
Expected: Early 2012
Price: Rs 4-5 lakh
Say hello to the successor to the iconic Maruti 800. Maruti’s low-cost car and answer to the Tata Nano and Hyundai Eon is in the final stages of testing and should go on sale within the first half of 2012.
To keep costs down, the new car is based on the existing Alto platform and will share a lot of running gear with its sibling. Powering the car will be the 796cc three-cylinder motor from the old 800, although it will be thoroughly updated to meet Bharat Stage V emission norms that will come into effect in 2015. A new 800cc engine could replace this motor post-2015.
The car’s design is fairly basic and there are a lot of flat panels as these are cheaper to make. We expect the interiors to be quite basic too though the slightly taller proportions of the Alto should make the car marginally more spacious and comfortable than the original 800. Maruti is aiming for a sub-Rs 2 lakh price for the base version of the car. Tata should be worried.
Factfile:
Engine: 0.8-litre petrol
Power/Torque: NA
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: NA
Expected: Early 2012
Price: Rs 1.9-2.5 lakh
Mercedes-Benz B-Class
The latest B-Class is an important model for India. Why? It is the first car to be launched off Mercedes-Benz’s new front-wheel- drive (MFA) platform which will form the basis of a new generation of smaller (read cheaper) Mercs. At 4.3 metres long, the B-class is part- large hatch and part-mini-MPV. Interior packaging is good, so there will be ample space inside. The dashboard borrows elements from the SLS AMG and the CLS, adding to the luxurious cabin ambience.
A 1.8-litre diesel and a new 1.6-litre turbo-petrol will power the B-class and the transmissions could include a seven-speed dual-clutch ’box. Priced from around Rs 18 lakh, the B-class will be the most affordable Merc in India. But will choosy Indian customers take to the car’s unusual body style?
Factfile:
Engines: 1.8-litre diesel, 1.6-litre turbo-petrol
Power/Torque: 135bhp/30.5kgm, 156bhp/25.5kgm
Kerb weight: 1395-1475kg
L/W/H: 4359/1786/1557mm
Expected: Late 2012
Price: Rs 18-22 lakh
Mercedes Benz M-Class
To join Mercedes’ line-up will be the smart new M-class SUV. The lines are softer, the eye-like headlights with their LED detailing are pleasing, and the whole look is less brutish than before. A stylised cabin with Merc-typical luxury bits make the interiors a comfortable place to be in. The dash design in particular is a huge improvement over the staid styling of the old car’s. Ride quality should be a huge improvement and Merc’s Airmatic air suspension could be offered as an option to discerning customers with deep pockets. As with the current car, Mercedes is likely to offer just a single engine – the 3-litre V6 diesel in ML 350 CDI guise. A raft of updates see the engine improve in both efficiency and power which sees a bump up to 258bhp. Prices are likely to see a rise too when the car is launched in mid-2012.
Factfile:
Engine: 3-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 258bhp/63.2kgm
Kerb weight: 2175kg
L/W/H: 4804/1926/1796mm
Expected: Mid-2012
Price: Rs 60 lakh
Nissan Evalia (NV200)
With the Evalia, Nissan wants to take the Toyota Innova head-on. Styling is more commercial van than MPV and this appearance is not helped by the Evalia’s sliding rear doors. Like the Innova, the Evalia seats passengers in a 2+3+3 layout but where it should hold a crucial advantage is in terms of space; its monocoque body in theory more space efficient than the Innova’s ladder frame construction. Power is courtesy the 105bhp 1.5-litre diesel motor that does duty on the Nissan Sunny but it remains to be seen if the engine will be powerful enough to propel the Evalia with a full load. Pricing is likely to be in the range of Rs 7.5-12 lakh.
Factfile:
Engine: 1.5-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 105bhp/24.4kgm
Kerb weight: 1269kg
L/W/H: 4400/1695/1860mm
Expected: Early 2012
Price: Rs 7.5-12 lakh
Renault Duster
Renault wants a presence in each segment of the car market and will be ready with its Duster mini-SUV by July next year. The Duster shares its platform with the Logan (now Mahindra Verito), so should be able to take a fair bit of abuse. But this is no off-roader in the true sense and will be sold in India in a two-wheel-drive avatar only. Interior space is impressive and, just like on the Logan, ride quality is nice and supple too. The Duster will have 1.6 petrol (105bhp) and 1.5 diesel (90bhp) engines. A more powerful 107bhp 1.5 diesel with reduced turbo lag will also be on offer. Expect prices to start at Rs 7 lakh for the base petrol-engined Duster.
Factfile:
Engines: 1.6-litre petrol, 1.5-litre
diesel, 1.5-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 105bhp/15.1kgm,
90bhp/20.4kgm, 107bhp/24.5kgm
Kerb weight: 1205kg
L/W/H: 4315/1822/1695mm
Expected: July 2012
Price: Rs 7-8 lakh
Renault Scala
Renault’s new midsize car, Scala will be to the Nissan Sunny what the Pulse is to the Micra. The cars will share the same platform, engines and, in all likelihood, the same interiors. However, exterior styling will be quite different. Engine options will include a 105bhp, 1.5-litre petrol and an 86bhp, 1.5-litre diesel. Renault will price the car aggressively, so expect this exciting new saloon to cost between Rs 7-9 lakh when it is launched in September 2012.
Factfile:
Engines: 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 97bhp/13.6kgm,
85bhp/20.4kgm
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: NA
Expected: September 2012
Price: Rs 7-9 lakh
New Porsche 911

It may not look radically different from its predecessor but this is the all-new sixth-generation 911. The car will go on sale in India soon after right-hand-drive sales commence globally. It will initially be sold in rear-wheel-drive Carrera (3.4 litre) and Carrera S (3.8 litre) coupé guises. Cabriolet and four-wheel-drive variants will follow in 2012, and pave the way for a range-topping 523bhp Turbo in 2013. The new 911 will sport a new seven-speed manual gearbox — a first for a series production road car. Apart from increased power and improved emissions, the new 911’s chassis has also been worked on for improved ride and even better dynamics.
Factfile:
Engines: 3.4-litre petrol,
3.8-litre petrol
Power/Torque: 345bhp/39.8kgm,
394bhp/44.9kgm
Kerb weight: 1455-1470kg
L/W/H: 4491/1808/1295mm
Expected: September 2012
Price: From Rs 90 lakh
Skoda Fabia Scout A rugged, go-anywhere hatchback sounds ideal for India and that’s exactly what the Fabia Scout is. The Scout is in essence a Fabia that uses taller springs to give it more ground clearance. There is no 4x4 system, so off-road ability will be limited to rutted paths at best. The Indian car we have spied testing at Aurangabad will feature gravel and scratch-resistant cladding on the lower portion of the doors, wheel arches and rear bumper. A scruff plate at the rear will also differentiate the Scout from the standard Fabia, though frontal styling will remain identical.
Engines will be shared with the Fabia. The Scout will be a niche product but if priced well could win itself a sizeable fan following.
Factfile:
Engines: 1.2-litre petrol, 1.6-litre
petrol, 1.2-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 75bhp/11.2kgm,
105bhp/15.6kgm, 75bhp/18.3kgm
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: NA
Expected: Mid-2012
Price: Rs 6-7 lakh
Tata Manza CSCropping the boot to get a midsize saloon under the crucial four-metre mark to benefit from the excise duty relief is a successful formula. Ask Tata Motors whose Indigo CS has been a big seller since launch. Tata would want to emulate this success with the Manza too and is said to be developing a sub- four-metre variant. If launched, the CS could use the Vista’s 1.2 petrol and 1.3 diesel engines. Like the Indigo CS, pricing should be competitive.
Factfile:
Engines: 1.2-litre petrol, 1.3-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 65bhp/9.8kgm,
74bhp/19.3kgm
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: NA
Expected: Late-2012
Price: Rs 5 lakh
Tata Safari Storme
It may be long in the tooth now but Tata Motors hasn’t given up on the Safari just yet. To be called the Safari Storme when launched in mid-2012, the SUV gets revised styling as part of the comprehensive update. The L-shaped headlights are new, the front grille is different and the side cladding more pronounced. Even the tail gets a makeover with restyled lights and the spare wheel now repositioned under the body. Unfortunately, the styling tweaks do not pass off as anything more than a facelift and that’s disappointing on a design that’s over a decade old. That said, massive interior space is a given on the Storme and the cabin also benefits with a serious quality upgrade.
Powering the Storme is Tata’s familiar140bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel Dicor engine but it’s the adoption of Tata’s modern X2 platform on the Safari that has changed the way it drives. Apart form improving driving dynamics, the new chassis also makes the Safari cabin a lot quieter than before. So the Safari Storme is more than just old wine in a new bottle. If Tata prices it in the Rs 9-10 lakh range, the Safari Storme could still win itself a sizeable fan following.
Factfile:
Engine: 2.2-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 140bhp/32.6kgm
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: NA
Expected: Early 2012
Price: Rs 11 lakh
New Toyota Camry
Toyota has played it safe with the Camry’s styling for far too long. However, the 2012 Camry is a whole lot more interesting than before. The lines have a hint of Lexus to them and the interiors are far more luxurious too. There’s more space on the inside and the rear seat is really comfortable. As expected, Toyota will replace the current Camry’s 2.4-litre VVT-i engine with the newer 2.5-litre VVT-i motor. Power output increases by 11bhp to 178bhp and expectantly the Camry also feels a lot more eager than before.
Other markets get the option of a six-speed manual gearbox though the Indian car may only come with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Camry clearly has the Honda Accord in its crosshairs. The big news is that Toyota plans to assemble the Camry from CKD kits at its Bidadi plant which translates to competitive pricing too. The lack of a diesel engine will remain the Camry’s Achilles’ heel, though.
Factfile:
Engine: 2.5-litre-petrol
Power/Torque: 178bhp/23.5kgm
Kerb weight: NA
L/W/H: 4825/1825/2775mm
Expected: October 2012
New Volkswagen Beetle
The latest Beetle has grown up, both in appearance and size. It retains many elements of the previous model and continues to look like an iteration of the original design classic. The interiors lose the flower vase now but the upward-opening glovebox does add a hint of vintage Beetle to the new dashboard. There is more space than before too. India should get the 158bhp, 1.4-litre petrol engine and VW could import the Beetle with the 138bhp, 2-litre diesel too.
The Beetle is more a designer accessory than a rival to conventional hatchbacks, so expect heavyweight pricing for this small car when it’s launched in late 2012.
Factfile:
Engines: 1.4-litre turbo-petrol, 2-litre diesel
Power/Torque: 158bhp/24.5kgm,
138bhp/32.6kgm
Kerb weight: 1360kg
L/W/H: 4278/2021/2048
Expected: Late-2012
Price: Rs 25 lakh

A great update about the latest launches or fresh arrivals in Indian automotive segment. The two biggest sensation are Duster and Ecosport. But people just got stuck between Ford EcoSport 1.5 Diesel Titanium 2013 vs. Renault Duster Diesel. It is pretty difficult to decide among them to own one. Each vehicle got its pros and cons. If I were the buyer I would prefer Renault Duster. Renault Duster has more SUV features.
